Marigold & Chiltepin Pepper Workshop

Join us on October 25th, 10 AM – 12 PM at Las Milpitas Community Farm for a vibrant workshop celebrating two iconic plants of the Southwest, the marigold and the chiltepin pepper. Discover how each brings beauty, resilience, and cultural meaning to our gardens and traditions.

Marigolds serve as a natural insect deterrent and make excellent companion plants, thriving in high heat from late spring through fall. Culturally, marigolds are deeply connected to Día de los Muertos, symbolizing remembrance and guiding loved ones home with their bright color and fragrance.

We’ll also explore the chiltepin, a native pepper of the Sonoran Desert. The chiltepin (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) is a small, wild chili pepper considered the “mother of all peppers” and one of the oldest forms of domesticated chili. The plant grows as a small perennial shrub (2–4 feet tall) with tiny, round fruits that ripen from green to bright red. Known for their intense, quick heat and smoky flavor, chiltepins are an important part of native and traditional food cultures throughout the Southwest and Mexico.
