Dennis and Betty Whitney walked their first Hunger Walk in 2013 drawn by its active spirit and the chance to support their community.
“Everybody needs to help out somehow or other,” said Dennis, reflecting on what inspired them to lace up their sneakers over a decade ago.
Over the years, the Whitneys collected a colorful array of Hunger Walk t-shirts, each one not only a memory, but a symbol of their commitment to their community. And rather than let those memories fade in a drawer somewhere, they decided to transform them into something everlasting.

Hand-stitched with care, the Hunger Walk quilt was born. “Nothing fancy, we’re amateurs,” laughed Dennis.
Now in their eighties, Dennis and Betty began stitching the quilt in August of last year and completed it by December. “We figured we should get started sooner than later,” joked Dennis.

The quilt is a testament to the spirit of the Hunger Walk itself: ordinary folks coming together in hopes of achieving something lasting and meaningful.
Come see the quilt at this year’s Hunger Walk, and start sewing your own memories.
